Going
all around the town searching for Ayu is the last thing Deke would agree to do.
Just because I had to bring him along, I added Mia’s name to the list. Like an
obedient robot following its command, Deke climbed onto the back seat of the rented
car we had now. I don’t know what’s between them but it helped me now.
I seriously didn’t think that Mia was missing.
I assumed that she was probably caught up with her sister at the club. To our
surprise or should I say shock, Mia hadn’t turned up at the club yet.
‘She
didn’t pick up her phone since the morning.’ Kelly was explaining to us. Deke
insisted that we finish confirming about Mia’s safety. I agreed thinking that
it’ll be alright provided the fact that she will be safe. Now things have been
totally different than what I presumed to be.
‘That
didn’t worry you?’ Sean was trying hard to hide his tension. Kelly, unlike a
sister who might have possibly lost her sister now was calmer than a river at
rest.
‘Well,
I did contact her neighbor. She always looks out for Mia like a big sister. She
had seen Mia in the morning…with Ayu.’ The last two words caught my attention
even and I listened closer. ‘Ayu seemed to have left first and Mia, after
fifteen minutes or so drove off in her car.’
‘Where
did they go? Do you think they went off together?’ I was rushing my questions
not bothering about the tension I might create. Sean gently laid his arm on my
shoulder to calm me down. Thankfully, Kelly had turned away to get us some
water.
‘I
think so. They have fights and they are silly, believe me. When this happens,
they always go off in separate ways to different places and show up here right
at end of the day for dinner where I’ll judge who was right on their part. So
it’s just one of those days…’
Somehow
Kelly’s faith in the girls’ behavior gave me some faith. She was smiling and it
is something hard to do when you are worried. We acted enough to hide the
anticipation that we were feeling before we came here and we held onto it until
we left. As we were walking out, as usual, Deke started to blabber.
‘I
bet this isn’t what happened. Probably on Mia’s part it is the case but not on
Ayu’s. She would have fought with Mia just so that she will not follow her on
whatever scheme she’s pulling and poor girl would’ve run off to calm herself.’
‘Thank
you, Sherlock. Just shut your cake hole.’ Sean was resenting to his violent
self to keep us at bay. Then he turned to me and asked ‘What do you think?’
All
I can feel is that she is safe but where she is or what she is doing is a
question whose answer is daunting enough for me to wish that I wasn’t here
right now…
~*~*~*~*~*~
I
wish I wasn’t here right now…!
Wrestling
on the floor, with me on top of her, wasn’t exactly how I imagined our reunion
to be.
‘Get
off of me! You plagiarist! You fake!’ she was trying to free herself from my
grip but I could tell her that she was a little rusty with her skills. I had to
calm her down before she attracted the neighbors’ attention.
‘Rachel!
Listen to me….it is me! It is me!’ I kept yelling out repeatedly but she was in
no form to listen to me. I had to yell at the top my voice to even get her to
look at me. ‘RACHEL! IT IS REALLY ME!!!’
For
that instant, she calmed down a bit. She slowly opened her eyes that she’d
closed the minute she saw me and started to freak out. She was not ready to
accept what she was seeing and I don’t blame her. Now, however, she was trying
to give me a chance.
‘Ayu…?’
she slowly dragged my name and to my relief, she wasn’t freaking out again. I
slowly let go of my grip and relaxed as I acknowledged her discovery.
‘Yes…it
is me…’ I still didn’t get off her but wasn’t smothering her as I did before. Then
again, I should’ve known better about Rachel.
She
freed her legs from my moderate hold and kicked me in my guts. I fell on the
floor with my hands holding on to my stomach when I heard her yelling out the
most bizarre conclusion she can land upon.
‘Ghost!
I have a ghost at my place! Oh My God! It is a ghost!’ like I said, dramatics
amplified!
Flinching
in pain, I opened my eyes a little bit wider to see what she was doing. She was
at her fireplace and moving the portrait above it. I have seen enough movies to
understand what particular people would have behind portraits over a particular
location and this person doesn’t give me the peace that I need right now. I
propped myself up on my feet and right then, Rachel was holding a fully loaded pistol
in front of my face. I had to talk before I got myself killed and I knew
exactly what to talk about.
‘Rachel
Ellen Wood! Put that damn gun down!’
Shell
shocked, she stood there, her gun still at me but not with the same rage that
she chose to pick up a weapon. I knew I had gotten to her and I knew she was
now softening up and bringing herself back to the plain reality.
‘How
do you know my middle name? The only person who knows that is…’
‘Me…’
I completed for her. ‘The reason you don’t use that is because that is your
grandmother’s name and every time someone uses it, you get reminded of her. You
also consider this your weak spot.’ I explained it clear enough for her to
believe it is me.
Then
again, it is Rachel. She doesn’t give up that easily.
‘You
can still be Ayu’s ghost! She knows this and if you are her ghost, you’ll know
it too!’ now the gun was at my face again and her face was trembling with
disbelief.
‘Are
you serious? A ghost? Come on…you were pre med once. Where are all your fancy
brain cells? It ain't working as well as it is supposed to be.’ I couldn’t help
but state sarcasm. She was insane now.
‘You
are a ghost. There is no rational explanation for this. And my brain cells are
working just fine. In fact, they are working enough to help me kill you!’ she
loaded her gun and placed it in front of me once again.
‘Rachel…you
don’t want to do this. You are making a mistake. It is me!’
‘Then
prove it…! My middle name isn’t hardcore proof.’
Putting
me in misery was nothing new to Rachel. In fact, it’s her hobby. Now however, I
am the one on the other side. I don’t have to be psychic to know what she was
thinking. I had to prove to her that it was me and I knew only one way was
left. I had to resort to one last trick in the book. If she still wasn’t
convinced, then I am as good as dead.
I
slowly pulled out my pocket knife and slit a little part in my hand. It started
to bleed profusely, just as I wanted it to. Coiling my knife back, I asked her
slowly.
‘Does
a ghost bleed?’
Almost
immediately after I asked the question, she dropped the gun, grabbed a napkin
and placed it on my wound applying pressure to stop the bleeding. While doing
so, she constantly kept staring at me, trying to process all of this in her
head. I don’t blame her though. In fact, I was still waiting for her to ask me
the million dollar question. And then it came…
‘Ayu…you were supposed to be dead.’
‘I
was…until three days ago.’ I slowly stated what she needed to know.
She
left the grip she was holding upon my wound and slid back on the couch behind
us. She was now entirely sure of what was going on and now she knows why I had
knocked on her door after all these years. She was aware and she wasn’t happy.
I slowly, still holding on to my wound, sat next to her on the couch waiting
for the anger wave to hit me. She finally gathered the words needed and blurted
out her disappointment upon me.
‘Ayu…what
did you do now?!’
~*~*~*~*~
Time
flies alright…and I learnt it the hard way.
Devouring
through Ayu’s journal was not as easy as I imagined it would be. Right after
she left my apartment, I got dressed and escaped my possible drawbacks. I made
sure that the neighbor of mine, Sheila, saw me driving away. That was because
when I don’t pick up my phone, Kelly will know from her that Ayu and I probably
had a fight. I am somewhat thankful for all those silly fights we’ve had so
that we had developed such a habit that helps me now. I had driven far away out
of town to give me all the space and privacy I needed to read it through.
When
I kept asking her for the truth for the past two days or so…I had no idea I’ll
be facing this much of it. Now I am having second thoughts about talking all
those bad stuff to her. She is, indeed, a very good person and she is stronger
than I ever thought that she would be. I cannot imagine the pain she has
undergone these past years and she is not to be blamed for any of the outcomes
that have come our way. Unfortunately, it is exactly what she’s been doing all
along.
Looking
at her today, I got scared. When I read about her, I get more terrified than
ever. She’s had a life that is so miserable any human would not tell it out
loud…even to the closest family he/she can have. And what right did we have to
ask her all those impossible questions and put her in more misery.
That
was the fourteenth time I’d jumped because on my vibrate mode. Keeping a phone
with the vibrate mode on inside your pocket and reading your best friend’s
horrendous past…is not a wise idea. You are already scared to death and every
vibration is like a bullet through my chest. It scares the hell out of me.
I
thought Kelly was the one calling but now when I took out the phone, I was
surprised. Not at the person who’s called but my own ignorance. Deke had been
calling me since morning and I didn’t even care. They must be worried about me
too. Deke is worried about me…that is sweet. Then again, I said that I’d not
contact the guys until I’m done reading. Now I am done reading…what do I do?
She
certainly wouldn’t want them knowing who she really is but then I want them to
know how much she’d be doing right now to keep them safe. I am not ready to
have such a dilemma right now. I am feeling like I have post traumatic stress
in some way. This dilemma would just hurt me.
Think
Mia…just think. Act on your own
I
closed my eyes to take a moment and think about what to do. Almost instantly, I
heard Ayu’s voice speaking the words she said last before leaving.
‘I will always
love you and respect you for the friend you’ve been to me. Thanks, Mia.’
Right
then I knew exactly what to do. I revved up my engine and started to drive
towards the city.
~*~*~*~*~
‘And
we are all set!’ I was surprised to see Rachel’s skills in mending wounds
weren’t as rusty as I thought it would be. However, I was being forced to keep
my thoughts to myself now.
It
must’ve been roughly at least ten to fifteen minutes since I came here and
after her initial question, Rachel hasn’t spoken one word to me. every time I
attempt to open my mouth, she either places the medicine on my wound, making me
yell, or sticks a needle to ease the pain or just give a grip so that I’ll be
wincing in pain rather than talk to her. Now I have had enough and I decided to
start on a light note.
‘I
am happy to see that you are still in touch with your doctor side…’ I managed
to finally speak out those words with a faint smile.
She
immediately looked up and gave me a stare. Not just any stare…’The Stare’. The
stare that only Rachel specializes in and it bothers me almost every time.
Right now, however, I decided to fight it and stared back at her, still
maintaining a part of that so called smile I held before. Looking at my
persistence, she finally took a deep breath, hinting that it might lead to a
conversation. And it did…
‘I
am not very happy to see you Ayu…’ …to end up in the worst start ever.
But
a start is a start…and I chose to capitalize.
‘I
know that…that is how you are supposed to feel. I…’ there is something about my
friends. No one lets me talk it out.
‘You
let me think that you were dead! You could’ve just shown up at my door three
years ago telling me the reason. That would’ve been way better than this. To
top it all off, you’ve been watching me, hiding in the shadows, like some evil
being. You cannot come by for a bottle of beer?’ she walked off into the other
room and started to meddle in the fridge. Like the multitasking person she is,
she kept yelling till here.
‘Now
you are here, knocking at my door and I can’t help but imagine one reason. And
I know you know that too. So…’ she joined me in the living room where I was now
standing to face her as she continued ‘…is that true?’
If
anyone knew about what was happening around us, it was only Rachel. Right now,
I knew what she was implying. So then, I confessed to her.
‘Yes
Rachel…I met them.’ I stuttered the words out ‘I met the boys…’
‘And
I am assuming…three days ago?’ she asked me coolly.
‘That’s
right. It happened out of the blue. I never planned it and all…’
‘I
know that. You would never plan to meet them. If you did, you wouldn’t have met
them three days ago. You would’ve been at the place with them.’ She knows
exactly what I would do. We share that kind of a rapport. ‘Now this is posing
us trouble how?’ she asked me finally.
‘Their
parents got kidnapped and I think it is because of me.’ I stated the reason
clearly but Rachel’s brains seemed to be working in parts.
‘Wait…their
parents? I thought the boys were orphans too!’ she notes exactly the important
parts.
‘Apparently,
they were alive and around. They just weren’t around their children. They came
in right about…’ I couldn’t spit out the last few words as it brought back lot
of memories that weren’t memorable.
‘…after
you left?’ Rachel finished it for me and I slowly nodded my head in
acknowledgement. She knew what I was going through and safely took me away.
‘And why do you think it is because of you?’
‘Come
on, Rachel…what else this could mean?’ I didn’t understand why she was being
dismissive of the reason.
‘Think
clear Ayu…the parents just came into their lives and that too right after you
left. This is shady to me. It wasn’t for you? Didn’t you do a background check?’
her explanation was really tempting enough for me to wish it was true but it
ain't…
‘The
boys had a paternity test with their parents. They are legit.’ I slowly uttered
those words hinting my feeling.
‘Then
there must be something else…you’ve been dead three years! They are dealing
with you. You wouldn’t let it slip. How come are you still sure?’
I
can see what Rachel was trying to do. She was hoping if there was any other
alternative for this situation. She wanted me to be dead in their eyes as much
as I want to be. Then again, we don’t always get what we want…at least I don’t.
I have established that more than once before. I had to let her know what it was
actually and how serious it has become.
‘I
saw Ethan when he tried to take the boys…’ and that was it.
Rachel’s
eyes speak for her thoroughly. She doesn’t have to emote as much for me to
understand what is going on in her head. And the name I mentioned was something
she expected not to hear but then…
‘Ethan…he
was there?’ she couldn’t let it sink in yet and she was wishing that I would
tell something to change her fears. What I had to tell more was just going to
make it worse.
‘They
took the boys right after their parents got kidnapped and they asked them to
kill someone to ensure the freedom of their parents. That is their plan…now add
up all the elements, Rachel. You still don’t believe it is me that they are
after?’
She
took a moment and a deep breath before she answered. ‘Emotional
torture…bringing out old connections…getting you out…yeah. Sounds like you are
the target.’
An
eerie silence took over while both of us found no words to continue. It was not
the best of the situations and we did not want to meet like this…not ever. In
fact, it was a very selfish act on my part when I decided to knock on her door.
‘So…what
do you need me for? You let me think that you were dead for three years. Now
why would you come knocking? Are you planning to pull me back in? If that is
the plan…I will push you out!’ Rachel realized the other important question and
gave me the lead to reveal my actual plan.
‘I
am not going to pull you back in. This is my battle…not yours! I need other
favors…’
‘What
kind?’ now she got curious and I could see it in her body language.
‘The
Rachel I knew will never turn her back on the enemy. I might be dead or was
dead, but you, you are still alive but in hiding. You have a reputation to
maintain and a life to live. So, I am guessing that you have a constant check
on them…up to date?’
‘Am
I that vulnerable?’ she was a little shocked by my assessment of hers. She
always tries to act mysterious.
‘Not
vulnerable…you’re just obvious…’ I smiled as I stated the difference.
‘Obvious?
That is even worse!’ now she was making all of this about herself.
‘So
I can take that as a yes?’ I pulled her back into the picture.
‘Yeah…you
are right!’ she agreed sheepishly.
‘Just
give me current locations, stats and info and I am out of here. You will not
see me again ever in your life…’
‘Whoa…slow
down!’ now she caught me off guard. ‘You’re going to run in there alone?’
‘I
can deal with them. Actually, I want to deal with them.’ I was being vague but
Rachel understood what I meant.
‘You’re
going to turn yourself in?’ she slipped the words out slowly and I could see
the disbelief in it. ‘You had to play dead to escape that hell hole and now you
just want to walk right in?’
‘Rachel…nothing
else matters to me than the safety of the boys. Just by looking at them in
their show, I put them and their parents in danger. I let my guard slip one
time and now I am not dead anymore. If all of this hiding and atrocity and the
suffering has to end…I am going to have to be gone. That is the only solution…’
Completely
contrary to the reaction that I imagined, Rachel started to laugh out loud.
‘Why
am I not surprised?’ and then I knew the reason behind her laugh. I felt low at
the moment. So I decided to leave it then and there.
‘Just
give me what I need…I’ll be out.’
‘I
know what you need. You need backup and I am all you’ve got. So, let’s roll
together’
Now
she was insane.
‘Rachel…don’t
you play! You’ll be blowing your cover! I cannot have you risking your life for
my mistake.’
‘The
minute you rang my doorbell my cover was blown. So, I am not going to act like
it didn’t. I, for the record, knew that you did not die. You wouldn’t have and
that is who you are. You have more reasons to live than I do and I am not going
to let you go down that hell hole alone. Not this time. So, you shut your cake
hole and follow my lead and we will make it out of this together. Are we
clear?’
I
remained silent, staring at her in rage. She had no idea what she was signing
up for. She had absolutely no need to come along with me. We both have lost
enough and especially Rachel. I cannot take the fact that she might be in
danger because of me.
‘Listen
Ayu… no matter what you try, you cannot lose me. I am your database now and I
ain't talking until you let me in on this. We can do this…just like the old
days. What say?’
And
if I knew one thing about Rachel…she is one pain in the ass. I had no other
choice but to…
‘Like
the old days it’ll be…’ …agree with her stupid plan.
What
lay ahead is a mystery but I know one thing for sure. The bad guys had it
coming for them.
